For the 1998-1999 school year, NKE had three exciting workshops including John Feierabend. Final arrangements were also being made for the 2000 OAKE national conference, held in Seattle and hosted by NKE. There was a new program instituted as well, that allowed people to attend workshops ‘remotely’. They paid the regular price and received the handouts and a video tape, on loan, of the workshop. This was done so that people who could not make the workshop for religious reasons could still benefit from the experience, but on a later date. Summer Kodaly classes at SPU were going strong at this point, as 39 people attended of the summer of 1998. Classes were taught by Susan Seneft and Rita Klinger.

September 19, 1998: “Make It and Take it”
9:00 am to 1:00 pm; Medidian Park Elementary; Shoreline, WA
(from the nke announcement) have you ever wondered what other successful music teachers use in their classrooms to enhance student learning? This is your chance to not only learn about what your peers are doing, but to actually make teaching aids for use in your own classroom and take them with you at the end of the workshop. You will have the opportunity to “make and take” five different teaching aids, plus receive patterns and instructions for your students. These teaching aids will be demonstrated by the teachers who use them in their classrooms. You will also receive information on where to purchase additional supplies at reasonable costs. Join us for a day filled with great ideas!
Board members took turns presenting dozens of activities. The day started with rhythm activities, with topics including popsicle sticks, “BRAC” cards, beat visuals, flashcards, and ‘fraction pie’ which was also a make-and take activity.
Next, Christopher, Lynn, and Sheila presented many different solfege activities. Topics included Staffmats, Handsign ladder, pipe cleaner notes, note wand, and more. The day was wrapped up with singing games and an inner hearing exercise.
This workshop will focus on how to include international folkdance in your everyday music lesson. Included will be techniques on classroom management, how to introduce dancing and dances, integration of dance into the music and general elementary curriculum, and kid-tested and approved dances for grades K-6. Wear comfortable clothing, bring a water bottle and be prepared to dance! If you have Phyllis Weikart’s Rhythmically Moving book, bring it along. Music and dance material will be available for review and purchace.
Adrienne Sabo teaches grades 1-6 in the Lake Washington School District. She previously taught in Edmonds where, along with her principal, she developed a performance folkdance group for grades 1-6, recess recreational dancing, and dance in music class. She has done levels work in both Kodaly and Orff and incorporates both in her teaching. Folkdance has become an integral part of her teaching and her students will attest, a favorite part of their day.

Friday: Readiness for literacy: Just as a child experiences language as a readiness for reading and writing, certain types of singing and movement experiences should precede the introduction of music literacy training. this session will engage participants in activities that develop a readiness for literacy.
Saturday: Developing Literacy using Conversational Solfege: The process of music literacy should develop much the same way as beginning language skills: first conversationally and later through reading and writing. This session will discuss twelve stages of development which includes improvisation and composition skills through a literature-based system called Conversational Solfege.
Dr. John Feierabend is considered one of the leading authorities on early childhood development in music and movement. He is director of the Music Education Division at the Hartt School of the University of Hartford and Director of the National Center for Music and Movement in the Early Years. He is the immediate past President of the Organization of American Kodaly Educators.
